Marr (1978) underlines the need for choosing appropriate kinds of representation systems for different levels in the vision process. In natural language processing research as well, it is most important to underline the need for differentiating among different levels of understanding, in accordance with Minsky (1975), Schank (1981), Wilensky (1983).

The role of a certain kind of representation is to make certain information explicit at an appropriate level and time. Specific selection of a certain kind of representation will therefore deeply affect the kind of analysis which a text may consistently undergo and the kind of data and evidence we may derive from that. When specific image understanding programmes were started, adequate conceptual tools were also developed in the field of vision, which could be consistently adapted and productively transferred into research in natural language processing aimed toward organisation of a complex and natural model for automatic extraction of relevant information out of texts. Along those lines, we may think of developing context and style sensitive systems, which may be conceived and designed in order to allow for different levels of interpretation and conceptual extraction out of texts to actually occur, so as to enhance the level of transparency that some communicative intercourse and activities strictly require.

A three-dimensional text-scene analysis corresponds to a process of complete description and recognition of text complexity and a context and style sensitive analysis of text will also make it possible to capture the inherent complexity of a text when transported from one culture into another and from one setting into a different one.

The present approach is meant to augment already existing models of two- dimensional text processing by obtaining three-dimensional text processing, which is a tremendously powerful enhancement, both for text generation and for text understanding. Context and style sensitive text processing indicates the fundamental role of each specific communicative environment.

To be accurately checked, detection and reconstruction of the originating

communicative positioning of a given text are to be derived either from direct observation and accurate analysis of the variety of positioning attitudes shown by individuals participating to the process or by accurate projection of estimated attitudes based upon culture-bound and context-dependent assumptions. If context and style sensitive systems are designed to handle information which comes out of a noisy communicative environment, as the one we live in today, they obviously have to allow for readjustment at different degrees. Visual preprocessing is a first step for enhancement and is already a very common practice in visual data processing. Context and style sensitive techniques are aimed towards monitoring different kinds of operations which may be performed upon text by supporting consistent interpretive tools and specific techniques for text modification at different levels of complexity, which would otherwise be unmanageable.
